Day of English 2015

This year, we are celebrating the Day of English on 3rd June. Like in previous years, we ask you to wear clothes with words or phrases in English or with English motifs (flags, landmarks, etc.).

This is the programme of activities for the Day of English 2015.

Este año, vamos a celebrar el Día del Inglés el día 3 de junio. Como en años anteriores, os pedimos que ese día os pongáis prendas con palabras o frases en inglés o con motivos ingleses ( banderas, monumentos, etc.).

Students' presentations: My favourite TV series

The fourth years have prepared a presentation about their favourite TV series.  First, they were allowed time to surf the net for all the information they needed for the task: number of seasons and episodes, actors, characters, plot, etc.  Later, the students had to prepare a slideshow to accompany their oral presentation. After they had had their drafts revised by the teacher, they gave their presentations for the rest of the class last week. In spite of the nerves, most of the presentations were pretty good and we hope they will be much better in future projects. Some of the students said that they found this activity enjoyable because of their interest in the topic.

Los alumnos de cuarto curso han preparado una presentación sobre su serie de televisión preferida. En primer lugar, se les dio tiempo para buscar por internet la información que necesitaban para la tarea: número de temporadas y de episodios, actores y actrices, personajes, argumento. Después los estudiantes tuvieron que preparar una presentación de diapositivas para acompañar su presentación oral. Después de que el profesor les revisase los borradores, la semana pasada hicieron su presentación delante del resto de la clase. A pesar de los nervios, la mayoría de las presentaciones fueron bastante buenas, y esperamos que sean mejores en futuros proyectos. Algunos alumnos y alumnas dijeron que les había gustado esta actividad porque conectaba con sus intereses. Debajo puedes ver algunos momentos de las presentaciones.

Bonfire Night

The third and fourth years have been reading about the celebration of Bonfire Night and its historical origins. Bonfire Night is celebrated on 5th November in many cities and towns, not only in the United Kingdom but also in some other English-speaking countries, such as the USA, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. It commemorates the date of the uncovering of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, when Robert Catesby, Guy Fawkes and some other conspirators attempted to kill king James I by blowing up the Houses of Parliament with barrels of gunpowder they had placed in the cellar.

Guy Fawkes was arrested, tortured and executed. People lit bonfires in the streets to celebrate the fact that the king had survived. Nowadays Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, is celebrated at large organized events with bonfires, fireworks and parades. One of the most prominent celebrations takes place in Lewes, a town in East Sussex, England. Here are some pictures of this year's event.

Los alumnos de tercero y cuarto han leído en clase acerca de la celebración de la Bonfire Night (Noche de las Hogueras) y su origen histórico. La Noche de las Hogueras se celebra el 5 de noviembre en muchas localidades no solo del Reino Unido sino también de otros países de habla inglesa como EE.UU.,  Canadá, Nueva Zelanda y Sudáfrica. Conmemora la fecha en la que se descubrió la Conspiración de la Pólvora (Gunpowder Plot) de 1605, cuando Robert Catesby, Guy Fawkes y algunos conspiradores más intentaron asesinar al rey Jacobo I volando la sede del parlamento con unos barriles de pólvora que habían colocado en el sótano.

Guy Fawkes fue detenido, torturado y ejecutado. La gente encendió hogueras en las calles para celebrar que el rey había sobrevivido. Hoy en día, la Noche de las Hogueras, también conocida como Noche de Guy Fawkes, se celebra en grandes eventos organizados, con hogueras, fuegos artificiales y desfiles. Una de las celebraciones más importantes es la que tiene lugar en Lewes, una población de East Sussex (Inglaterra). Aquí puedes ver algunas fotos de la fiesta de este año.

Halloween 2014

This year we celebrated Halloween one day in advance (30th October instead of  the 31st) because it fell on the same day as the "Amagüestu".

The preparations had begun a few weeks before, with the students of the first, third and fourth year of ESO designing posters with magic Halloween potions (some of them were really creepy) and the students of all the four school years making their own popcorn boxes, which they had to cut, fold, paste and decorate themselves. Some of the designs were really imaginative.

On the 30th we put up the posters along the corridors on the first floor for everybody to see. Some of our colleagues of infant and primary education also helped with the decorations, such as creepy monster faces on the doors, ghosts in the staircase, bats hovering over our heads, pumpkins...
There were no lessons after the lunch break. Instead, the students and their teachers enjoyed a Halloween film in English and a box of popcorn. The first and second years saw Coraline with Spanish subtitles, whereas the third and four years watched Dark Shadows with subtitles in English.
I would like to congratulate the students for a job well done and I hope everyone found it enjoyable.

Este año celebramos Halloween con un día de antelación (el 30 de octubre en lugar del 31) porque coincidía con el Amagüestu.
Los preparativos empezaron una semanas antes. Los estudiantes de 1º, 3º y 4º de ESO diseñaron posters con pócimas mágicas de Halloween (algunas eran auténticamente escalofriantes) y los alumnos de los cuatro cursos hicieron sus propias cajas para palomitas, que tuvieron que cortar, doblar, pegar y diseñar ellos mismos. Algunos de los diseños eran muy imaginativos.
El día 30 colocamos los pósters por los pasillos para que todo el mundo pudiera verlos. Algunos de nuestros compañeros y compañeras de educación infantil y primaria también ayudaron con las decoraciones:  caras de monstruos en las puertas, fantasmas por la escalera, murciélagos revoloteando sobre nuestras cabezas, calabazas...
Por la tarde no hubo clase y los estudiantes y sus profesores y profesoras disfrutaron de una película de Halloween en inglés y de un paquete de palomitas. Los estudiantes de 1º y 2º  vieron Coraline con subtítulos en español, mientras que los de 3º y 4º vieron Dark Shadows (Sombras tenebrosas) con subtítulos en inglés.
Mi enhorabuena a los estudiantes por su buen trabajo. Espero que todos y todas hayáis disfrutado.
